Mag Rouge – Issue 2

When Meg & Yelena asked me to be a part of their botanical garden shoot for Mag Rouge I was elated!  For one, I knew not to expect anything less than perfection with Meg Perotti behind the lens. Two, I knew the styling would be to-die for simply because Yelena of Stylish Soiree does nothing less than exceptional.

Nina & Jimmy | W Hotel San Francisco Wedding

She wore Vera! swoon

Nina, a fashionista bride, pulled out all the stops in a form fitting Vera Wang number & uber sexy Christian Louboutains stilettos.  Deep jewel tones and the San Francisco skyline played a beautiful accent to this tastefully chic and modern city wedding.

I’m so fortunate to have such beautiful and sweet clients!  Thanks Nina trusting me with your hair makeup needs for your big day!

Congrats to Nina & Jimmy!

Lauren & Michael | An intimate elopement

After a very long, and I mean  a VERY long, courtship Lauren & Michael said their “I dos” in a very small and very intimate wedding surrounded by a handful of family.  Originally a Seattle native, longtime Indiana resident and now a real housewife of New Jersey, they chose the picturesque back drop of San Francisco’s beautiful City Hall for their ceremony followed by an intimate dinner reception at the famed  Jardinere Restaurant in Hayes Valley.

The bride was one of the sweetest I have ever met.  She was so calm, relaxed and just had great energy and a norwegian accent!
Congratulations to Lauren & Michael!

Amanda & Joe | Hyatt Incline Village at Lake Tahoe wedding

After growing up blocks away in the same town for most of their lives, it took a spring break trip to Maui for these two lovebirds to finally meet.  The serendipitous meeting soon followed with a 10 year courtship and then ending with the couple saying “i, do” as the beautiful pink and blue hue Lake Tahoe skyline lay as the perfect backdrop.   Of course, all this wouldn’t have been possible without the presence of their dear friends, family and frozen yogurt.

Engagement Session | Jenn & John

Jenn is a straight shooter and has the ability to make you feel like instant friends. The lovely couple will be tying the knot in March, in a beautiful ceremony that will mix Chinese traditions and modern rustic elements.

Lily was able to capture their personalities so perfectly as they went around town starting off at a nursery, to the mission district and ending their shoot at the historical Ferry Building.

Shot by the lovely Lily Yip of Bllew Photography.

Engagement Session | Katlin & JP

My lovely friends Katlin & JP will be getting married next summer with the picturesque backdrop of Malibu and it’s beautiful sunny beaches.

Both being San Diego transplants and now residing in the Bay Area, what better place to capture their love than in the city where they first met? We started the day by hitting up Chinatown, Ferry Building and ended the day in Potrero Hill  with an amazing view of the city skyline

I was also excited to work with their LA based photographer again, Youkeun Oh!

Armaita & Clifton | St. Francis Yacht Club Wedding

How lucky am I to have such beautiful and fun brides!

Brides always ask me if I have any fun stories to share… There is none I remember more than Armaita’s poor grand-aunt calling to say she couldn’t make it… but that story will have to be a separate post.

As soon as I walked in through the door Armaita’s mom, Karen, made me feel right at home.   And it was just a matter of moment before everyone made me feel like I was part of the family.  Her brother even wanted me to iron his shirt!

Congrats to Armaita & Clifton!  Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your big day!

Personal

You can’t please them all…

Recently, I received my first one-star review on Yelp.  Admittedly, my heart sank as I read line by line as this reviewer criticized my every move.  I couldn’t help but feel like a horrible person, a terrible business owner and more importantly it made me doubt myself as an artist.

I always try to do to my best to connect with my clients.  This one was no different.  During the trial session, we talked and laughed.  I even chatted up with her mother, who she brought along to our session, about her hometown and my favorite eats in the area.  I don’t know what I had done differently this time around.  Perhaps, she just wanted to be WOWed, who knows?

In the review, she mentions she let me have free reign on makeup but sometimes no direction is not always better than some or even lots of direction.   Makeup can be a very powerful tool but it’s also a very personal thing.   Some women might like a lot of makeup and others feel it masks who they are. But as a makeup artist, we are not mind readers especially with brides.  For a photoshoot or a production gig, we are given direction from the director, producer or the photographer on how a person needs to be portrayed.  With brides, everyone has different tastes, different knowledge and just different experiences when it comes to makeup. But if we aren’t given a vision, its hard to know what will or will not please the client.  Most of the time, people do not have a clear vision on how they want to look but with no clear vision it’s hard to know which direction to go.  Most often times, my clients give me a mood they want to feel or a look they want to give off and I’ll execute it to the tee. Apparently in this case, I missed… even though I thought she looked great.

My only wish was that if this client felt uncomfortable about the makeup and her experience, I wish she would have voiced her concerns instead of holding them in and insisting she was ok with it.   I would’ve done by best to ease her concerns and suggest we to do another look.  I don’t take offense to feedback  At the end of the day, I just want my clients to be happy and feel confident.

My suggestion to future clients inquiring about services or any future brides seeking a trial session, please make sure to communicate. Communication in all relationships is key, especially between artist and client.  Communicate all your dislikes and likes, if you don’t like the service or if you don’t like the look, communicate as much as possible.   Although an artist may be known for their fabulous work it doesn’t mean that you just sit back and expect them to wow you.  The trial session is a collaboration between the artist and bride.   This is your chance to work collectively to acheived your ultimate look.   Clearly explain your concerns, likes, dislikes and overall vision of your event and how you want to look. Trial sessions aren’t cheap so make sure to your maximize the session to it’s fullest potential.

This has been a humbling experience to say the least.  However, instead of treating this as though it’s life threatening, I’ll walk away with from it as a lesson learned and accept that sometimes… you just can’t please them all.

Before & After – Terra

Well… this is more like just an after. I swore to Terra that I wouldn’t post her before picture so here are the after pics. Before or after, in between, or however you want to put it… she is simply stunning. Big almond eyes, tall nose, high cheekbones, big luscious lips and great skin to boot. Sucks to be her… of course, I’m kidding.

Terra recently wed in June but had to postpone her wedding photos due to the downpour of rain on her wedding day.
