We are introducing a new series called meet the ARTIST where we will be going inside the minds of creative people. The first Artist that we are introducing is Jenny Hong… please enjoy.
Tell us what you do.
I am a fashion designer and an aspiring illustrator.
What inspired you to get into your profession?
There was an Issac Mizrahi’s collection ad campaign I had seen on my walk home from school in the early 90′s. And I thought it was the most prettiest and new thing I had seen. I did not grow up with fashion magazines or any publications so I had never seen such “beauty.” That pretty much got my interest in fashion. But I always knew I was going to be in a creative field.
Describe your style.
My style is pretty masculine. A black blazer, a silk blouse/top, torn black skinny jeans, flats are my uniform if I am going to a meeting and then off to dinner after. I love t-shirts, hi-top sneakers, lace up boots, a crisp poplin white shirt are some of my favorite item of clothing.
What are some of your favorite places to shop?
I like a variety in the things I wear as far as labels go but I look for the items that I always gravitate towards such as striped knit tops, jeans, cashmere sweaters or a white tshirt and not so much for specific labels. Right now, I can afford H&M for basics, Madewell 1937 for button down shirts, Clubmonaco for cool pieces, Zara for fast trends but I would like to wear Martin Margiela sweaters, Vince t-shirts and tanks, Earnest Sewn & Current/Elliot jeans, dresses from Alber Albaz for Lanvin and everything A.P.C.
Who are some of your favorite style and beauty icons?
Charlotte Gainsbourg for her cool, easy French look, Audrey Hepburn for the classic, chic beauty, Freja Beha Erichsen for her androgynous style and Alexa Chung for girly boy looks.
What are some of your favorite beauty products that you can’t live without?
I’m not much of a beauty product person as far as makeup goes but I do have couple of things that I enjoy using when I feel like I want to wear some makeup: The Powder from La Mer, a little bit of mascara from Laura Mercier, eye brow pencil from Korea I bought 3 years ago (Do eyebrow pencils expire?), Shu Uemura eyelash curler and a Kiehl’s lip balm. I also use YSL Volupte Sheer Candy lip balm. It was a gift from a friend and it is heavenly on my lips! But my every day routine is Shiseido’s cleanser, Oil of Olay moisturizer and once a week mud mask from Borghese Fango Active Mud for face/body that I use for my strawberry nose!
Can you please share with us your favorite beauty secret or tip?
I don’t think this is a secret but I use a face tissue with any moisturizer to remove makeup if I don’t have any on hand. Aquaphor is also good for any dry parts of your body and it also does remove eye makeup which I use sometimes. But I think everyone knows that!
